Ohio Genealogical Society to Hold 2005 Conference in Akron, Ohio

16 October 2004

The theme for the 2005 Conference of the Ohio Genealogical Society, scheduled for April 14-16 in Akron, Ohio, is "From Farmland to City Streets: Our Ancestors' Changing Environment."

The 2005 program features several nationally known lecturers, including John Colletta, PhD, who will share his knowledge with attendees on the subjects of passenger arrival records, researching in the Library of Congress, and researching Italian ancestry. Altogether, the program for the three-day conference includes 34 speakers presenting a total of 56 lectures on a broad array of topics. The program also includes four two-hour workshops on April 14.

At the conference, the society will be inducting OGS members into three lineage societies: First Families of Ohio; Society of Civil War Families of Ohio, and Settlers and Builders of Ohio. FFO inductees will have proved lineage from settlers in Ohio before 1820, and SBO inductees will have proven their lineage from residents of the state before 1860. SCWFO inductees will have proven their lineage from Civil War veterans, either Union or Confederate, who either lived in Ohio or served in Ohio units.

The 2005 Conference and accompanying exhibition will be held at the Quaker Square Convention Center in downtown Akron. The adjoining Crowne Plaza Hotel will serve as the headquarters hotel for the conference.

The Ohio Genealogical Society is the largest state genealogical society in the nation, with over 5000 members in 94 chapters around the state and elsewhere in the U.S. It publishes The OGS Quarterly, OGS Genealogy News, Ohio Records & Pioneer Families, and Ohio Civil War Genealogy Journal.
