Rare Book Room Holdings

Library patrons often inquire about what is contained in our rare book room which is locked and is accessible to staff only. Ninety percent of the room is filled with manuscript collections, archival supplies, the original 1880 census, a photocopy of our Bible records files, cassette tapes from past conferences, library equipment, and work tables. One shelving unit in the room actually does contain books. Some of them are indeed rare. Many original Ohio county cadastral atlases are preserved here with the reprint out in the oversize book section of the library. Some OGS publications and statewide indexes are merely duplicates for the time when our library copy wears out. Some books are not particularly rare but are fragile and would not hold up on the shelves. And a few titles are here just because the donor requested some additional security. Any item in the Rare Book Room may be utilized by patrons by making a request of the library staff and/or volunteers on duty.
