Ohio Marriage Index
The Ohio Department of Health maintains a statewide index of births, divorces and marriages. These indexes were consolidated from the county probate records of Ohio’s 88 counties. Some of these indexes were obtained by the Ohio Genealogical Society. They are not complete. There are missing years and some years have missing entries.
The Ohio marriage index contains 1,974,897 marriage information between January 1, 1970 to December 31, 1990. The years 1972, 1974 and 1975 are incomplete while 1971 is missing.
Copies of original Ohio vital records must be secured from a variety of locations depending on the record type. Marriages are located in county Probate Courts. Although the indices provided by OGS are after 1940, many of the Probate vital records (1867-1908) have been microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have been purchased by the Ohio Genealogical Society, Ohio Historical Society, and many county repositories and public libraries. Check online catalogs for the area in which you are researching.
SearchingNOTE: Because of the large number of records in this database, the search may take awhile, especially if Fuzzy or Soundex is used.
This database may be searched in the following ways:
- Fuzzy -- will search for that string of characters. Searching for Johns will yield Johns, Johnson, Johnston, etc.
- Exact -- will search for that exact text only. Searching for Johns would yield only Johns.
- Soundex -- will search for Soundex equivalent. Searching for Johns would yield Johns, Jonns, Jones, etc.
