Winners of the 6th Annual Ohio Genealogical Society Writing Competition

Again this year, OGS has received a wonderful group of genealogical article entries for the annual contest. Thank you, family historians, for sharing your genealogical scholarship with the OGS membership. The judging process is now finished. Each article was judged by three different people, independently, and scores were averaged.

The winner in the Ohio Genealogy News Division is Ronald E. Benson, of Naples, Florida for his article Use of yDNA in confirming the identity of the probable father of Jesse Ellis of Northampton, Summit County, Ohio.

The winner in the OGS Quarterly Division is Mari Margaret McLean, of Pataskala, Ohio with her article Finding Maxa Ann Hadden and Mr. McLean: Serendipity and the Brick Wall.

Each author will receive a choice: a one-year membership to The Ohio Genealogical Society or free admission to the day long Fall Genealogy Conference at the OGS headquarters the first weekend in October.

The following authors also scored well and will receive honorable mention certificates.

The OGN Honorable Mention certificate goes to Rebecca Hilbert of Westerville, Ohio for her article The Orphan Train Children of Preble County.

OGSQ Honorable Mention certificates go to:

  • Shelley K. Bishop of Dublin, Ohio for her article Turning Forests to Farms: The George Clark Family.
  • George C. Hibben of Lincoln, Massachusetts for his article He Worked to Build Up and Mold a Community - The Singular Life of Samuel Entriken Hibben, Community, Business, Political and Religious Leader of Hillsboro, Ohio.
  • Linda Davis Ballard of Urbana, Illinois for her article The Hinton Family From Maryland to Ohio and Illinois: Thomas Hinton III - James Hinton - Alfred Hinton; Charlotte Hinton Reno - Major Marcus A. Reno

The winning and honorable mention authors will be announced 27 April 2013 during the Annual OGS Business Meeting in Cincinnati. OGS members can expect to read these remarkable stories in future issues of our two journals. Many articles of non-winners also will be published.
